ITINERARY OF TOUR
Mashpi–Amagusa is a private reserve nestled deep in the heart of Ecuador’s Chocó bioregion, a biodiversity hotspot surrounded by pristine primary and regenerating secondary forests. This area is home to several endemic species, including the Glistening-green Tanager, Moss-backed Tanager, and the Indigo Flowerpiercer, among others.
We’ll begin our birding tour with an early pick-up at 4:00 a.m. from your hotel in Quito, heading west into the lush cloud forests of the Pacto region. Arrival at Mashpi–Amagusa Reserve is expected around 6:30 a.m., just in time for breakfast overlooking the Tanager feeders, where the action starts as soon as the sun rises.
From there, we’ll explore several birding spots within the reserve, including observation decks, moth traps, photography hides, and hummingbird feeders—all offering excellent opportunities for birding and photography.
Later in the morning, we’ll bird along the Amagusa Birding Road, a prime area for spotting additional Chocó specialties. Afterwards, we’ll continue to the Guaycapi feeders, located in the Tandayapa Valley. Here, you’ll enjoy a relaxing lunch while observing a different mix of species—possibly up to 12 hummingbird species, colorful tanagers, and even Cloud forest Pygmy Owl.
In the early afternoon, we’ll begin our return journey to Quito, with drop-off at your hotel by late afternoon.
Target Species: Glistening-green Tanager, Moss-backed Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer, Black-chinned Mountain Tanager, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Choco Vireo, Empress Brilliant, Green Thorntail, Rose-faced Parrot, Spinetails, Chlorophonias, Rufous- throated Tanager, Broad-billed Motmot, and others.
